In 1999, the original title was slated to be Clerks 2: Hardly Clerkin', as listed at the end of the credits of Dogma. Smith later modified the subtitle to Clerks II: The Passion Of The Clerks, lampooning the title of Mel Gibson's The Passion of the Christ. Smith later held a contest for a fan to choose the subtitle , but in the end, Smith stated that he thought the film was "too good for a joke title."
