Ken Macha has emerged as the leading candidate for the Brewers' managerial job, but Willie Randolph still has a viable option to be in uniform in 2009.
Randolph, who interviewed in Milwaukee last week, remains under consideration to be bench coach with the Rockies, who are managed by Clint Hurdle.
"Clint and I have traded phone messages," Randolph said. "We agreed to get back together after Milwaukee is resolved."
Randolph had been courted by Washington GM Jim Bowden to join Manny Acta's staff as a coach. But after Bowden made repeated calls to Randolph, the Nats announced a new staff without ever offering him a job, according to the Mets' former skipper. Randolph is owed $2.25 million by the Mets in 2009.
Hurdle could be on the hot seat next season, so his bench coach might be in line to be the interim manager if there is an in-season move.
