Kaye Cowher, wife of ex-Pittsburgh Steelers coach Bill Cowher, died on Friday after a long battle with skin cancer.  She was 54 years old.

"Kaye was such a loving and compassionate person and she was the foundation of our family," said Bill, who is now an analyst for CBS Sports. "Kaye was always at my side throughout my career as a player, coach, NFL analyst and, most importantly, as a parent to our three daughters Meagan, Lauren and Lindsay. They will miss their mother dearly.

"Kaye was the rock that we could all lean on in the tough times. She was looked up to by so many people and I cannot say enough about what Kaye meant to our family," he added. "Her memory will never be forgotten."

Kaye met Bill at N.C. State back in 1976, where he played football and she and her twin sister played women's basketball. The two got married in 1981.

She played a key part in Bill's choice to retire as a head coach in 2007 and move to Raleigh so they could all be together as a family while their girls completed their high school and college basketball careers.

Meagan, Lauren, and Lindsay each played Division I college basketball, as did their mother. Meagan and Lauren played at Princeton together, while Lindsay plays for Wofford.

The family is requesting privacy at this time and they have not released any information on Kaye's death. Services are to be held in North Carolina on Monday.
