Head coach Dick Jauron was fired by the struggling Buffalo Bills, the National Football League's team owner Ralph Wilson announced.
Jauron was in his fourth season as coach of Buffalo, who dropped to 3-6 after losing to Tennessee Titans 41-17 on Sunday.
"I have tremendous respect for Dick and thank him for all of his efforts during these past four years. While this was a very difficult decision, I felt that it is one that needed to be made at this time for the best interest of our team," Wilson said.
Buffalo has never had a winning season with Jauron at the helm.
Prior to joining the Bills, Jauron spent two seasons with Detroit as an assistant coach. The Lions finished 1-4 under Jauron in 2005.
The Bills named Perry Fewell as a replacement for Jauron. Fewell has been the team's defensive co-ordinator.
Buffalo's next game is Sunday, when the Bills (3-6) travel to Jacksonville.
"We are who we are," Fewell said. "We have that identity. We're going to try to give a little spark, but we are who we are."
Fewell said he hasn't decided yet whether he will start Trent Edwards or backup Ron Fitzpatrick as quarterback against Jacksonville.
