Jacksonville Jaguars coach Jack Del Rio on Friday finally cleared up the status of veteran linebacker Mike Peterson, telling ESPN that Peterson has been permanently demoted to backup status. "Daryl Smith is our starting middle linebacker," Del Rio said in a telephone conversation after Friday's practice, as the Jaguars got ready for the undefeated Tennessee Titans. Peterson, in his sixth season with Jacksonville and the team's leading tackler this season, was suspended for last week's game at Detroit and fined $10,000 for insubordination after he got into an argument with Del Rio in a team meeting the week before.Smith started in place of Peterson ... Wright of Jacksonville.com : The Jaguars parted ways today with their two high-profile free agents from a year ago, cutting receiver Jerry Porter and cornerback Drayton Florence two days after NFL teams were allowed to begin releasing players. Whit: Last years 8-8 record is misleading. Of the 8 losses, only one (@ Houston ) was by more than a touchdown. The Jaguars want to make a deep playoff run this year and for head coach Jack Del Rio’s sake, his team needs to make a move this year. Over the four seasons Del Rio has coached the Jags, they have failed to put up a winning record against any of their divisional rivals. The Jacksonville Jaguars' last trip to the West Coast was a debacle. Defensive end Quentin Groves caused a three-car accident on his way to the airport, missed the charter flight and got fined by coach Jack Del Rio. Receiver Mike Sims-Walker missed curfew before the game, got benched and fined. Things got worse when the Jaguars took the field.
