Bears Fire Turner, Rod Marinelli Promoted to Defensive Coordinator

Head coach Lovie Smith will be not be fired, but reports are showing that his coaching staff will change dramatically. Offensive coordinator Ron Turner will be fired (Hooray!), and defensive line coach Rod Marinelli will be promoted to defensive coordinator after a poor defensive performance from the Bears and Lovie taking on too many responsibilities.

There had been some speculation that Lovie wasn't coming back, but it appears the Bears will not make a move before the 2010 season with the head coach. He is due eleven million dollars over the next two seasons, which definitely plays a role in his return.

Turner, however, appears to be the one taking the fall for the Jay Cutler led failure on offense this season from the 7-9 Bears who, on Monday, bought a full-page ad in the major Chicago newspapers with an open letter to fans apologizing for the poor 2009 season.

Many fans have questioned the personnel decisions that were made before and during the 2009 season, like the Orlando Pace and Frank Omiyale signings, but it appears GM Jerry Angelo will escape the chopping block at this time as well.

Meanwhile Marinelli, who is loved by former and current players for his work as a d-line coach, was brought in after leading the 0-16 2008 Detroit Lions. His promotion to defensive coordinator can be perceived as a vote of no confidence in Lovie from upstairs because he had been calling the defense this year.

The Bears were hampered with injuries all season, most regrettably losing all-pro linebacker Brian Urlacher to a wrist injury during the first game of the year against Green Bay.
