Amlodipine and its variuos side effects

Caduet is a combination of two drugs – one of them is Amlodipine which is a long acting calcium channel blocker that inhibits the entry of calcium ions into vascular smooth muscle and cardiac muscle. Amlodipine inhibits calcium ion entry across cell membranes selectively, with a greater effect on vascular smooth muscle cells than on cardiac muscle cells. Amlodipine is a peripheral arterial vasodilator that acts directly on vascular smooth muscle to cause a reduction in peripheral vascular resistance and reduction in blood pressure & thereby it decreases work load of heart. It also dilates coronary arteries to increase blood flow to the heart. There are certain Caduet side effects that are also shared by its generic alternatives; the most common of these that are as seen with amlodipine include difficulty breathing; and swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Other observed Caduet Side effects include swelling in your hands, ankles, or feet; chest pain; slow or fast heartbeats; unusual weakness; numbness, tingly feeling; drowsiness, depression, nervousness; dizziness, spinning sensation; nausea, vomiting and diarrhea, constipation, dry mouth etc. The severity of these amlodipine side effects depends on the dosage taken. Caduet’s other ingredient Atorvastatin has one major Caduet side effect which is rhabdomyolysis; this is a weakening of muscles and is dangerous enough to be fatal. The other major side effect is myopathy i.e. muscular damage. Liver enzyme abnormalities have also been observed among patients on this drug. Caduet should only be taken on the prescription of a doctor, with special precaution to be taken when administered to women during pregnancy. As far as possible, it should not be prescribed to pregnant women.
