Recreational fun flying kites here in the Catskill Mountains of Sullivan County

See who's visiting the Catskills, Our guest blogger

Yesterday the temperature warmed up to 82 degrees, it was the perfect day for an outing. We managed to do two reviews, one was a small deli here in Jeffersonville,NY.

The other was at a Ice cream stand, reviews should be posted by Monday.

Today the sun was shining brightly and it was quite windy, perfect conditions for getting out the kites, just finding the right location was the only thing we had to worry about other than hoping that the strong winds didn't die down by the time we arrived at our destination.

Our unicorn kite

Ok so we found the right place, we decided to take our kites out into a parking lot of one of our local schools, the perfect place, if I do say so to fly kites. We originally had planned on finding a large field over by a farm, but decided not to only because the ground is still pretty soggy, you know those leftover conditions that the winter had brought us , and we didn't have to worry much about stepping into any gopher holes or any thing like that.

kite flying here in the Catskills, knotted string

As we started to unravel ( what I thought of it as a huge unending mass of kite string) , it brought back very fond memories of when I used to go out and fly kites with my older brother. I really had not merely as much experience of flying kites as my older brother did, but what I do remember is that as soon as my kite got hung up in a tree or my line got all twisted, he would run over to lend me a helping hand instantaneously.

Getting back to kite flying, I sure did a lot of running around the parking lot, felt like I was doing a darn marathon, my ankles and legs were slowly starting to ache. So I decided to take a different approach and decided to wait until the wind conditions were right, and so I stood there waiting. Success!!!!, a big wind gust came up upon the lot where I was standing and I slowly let the slack out as the kite started to take off. It was a slow start, a couple of minutes later, there she goes, my kite was ascending higher and higher into the air, it was a beautiful sight to see.

I have to laugh though, my kite is a large colorful unicorn, but several times throughout the time it was floating above the tree tops, it looked like a carcass of a dead goose, LOL!! It was the wind that had transformed this cute unicorn kite into another hideous creature.

getting the kite in the air

It was a constant source of disappointment every time the wind shifted and forced the kite back down to the ground, but I was consistent in my quest to keep my kite afloat.

At one point my kite had plummeted back down to the ground so fast and furiously, I could not control where it was going to land,I did however manage to keep it from getting caught in trees in the distance but finally I ended up having to untangle my lines, that took a good 15 minutes to straighten out.

Ken took several photos of our little kite flying expedition, his 14 year old son Sean was with us sharing in the laughter and crazy antics that went along with the experience of flying kites.

I think Sean had a better time watching me run around, almost tripping over my own 2 feet just trying to keep the kite up. We all had a great time and I have to say, it must be nice to be young again, watching ken's son made me realize that he has this innate ability to just about do anything including flying kites, he never ceases to amaze me, and if I only knew of a way to bottle up that boys energy, I'd probably be rich LOL!

It was getting late so we decided to pack it in and head on home, once home we decided we would look into buying a couple of new kites.

flying kites here in the Catskills

They have such a wide variety of kites available these days, ones that look like Bigfoot trucks, larger than life sea creatures as well as many other styles. Now it would be really nice, since modern technology has come so far, if they had kites that would fly by themselves, maybe one that would not all of a sudden do this Kamikaze nose dive slamming the kite into the ground?, LOL!Be our guest here in the Catskills of Sullivan County for a week. www.catskillmtnfyi.comOutdoor Sporting goods Find everything from camping to hiking here. www.catskillmtnfyi.comCamera & Photo find many accessories for your camera. www.catskillmtnfyi.com
