FAU CampusBOCA RATON - Police were searching the Florida Atlantic University campus this morning looking for a gunman who fired two shots during an on-campus party overnight.

One person -- who is not a student at the school -- was injured slight in the shooting at the University Village Apartments. It was not clear if the person was actually hit by a bullet, officials said.

The campus is on lockdown. Classes were canceled at the Boca Raton campus and students are being told to stay in their dorm rooms while police continue their search.

According to FAU Police Chief Charles Lowe, some sort of altercation occurred at the party around 1 a.m.. "Our suspect pulled out a firearm and, we believe, fired two shots," Lowe said.

A 911 call was placed immediately after the shooting, and officers responding found gun shell casings on the floor, Lowe said. A new alert system at the school was activated, which triggered sirens, mass e-mails and other announcements over a school communication system. Students were told there was an emergency and warned to say indoors.

"It seemed to work," FAU President Frank Brogan said of the alert system, which was installed just 60 days ago.

Brogan said the campus will remain in lockdown until the gunman is eight caught or it's confirmed that he is no longer on the campus. Final exams were scheduled today, but will be postponed. Graduation is set for Friday and is expected to go on as scheduled.
