In the fast pace society that we live in today we are always looking for quicker and easier ways of completing our tasks, whether it be eating fast food or communicating through twitter. In most cases when we want something we want it now, and that is no different when it comes to finding cheap college textbooks. The quickest way to find and compare textbook prices when buying would be to use a textbook search engine. We are going to review some sites that specialize in textbook searches and share our results with you. I have chose ten sites that ranked highly in google and specialize in searching for textbooks for students to buy, these sites are:

• BookFinder.com
• BigWords.com
• DirectTextbook.com
• AffordABook.com

We are going to use “Introductory Chemistry for Today” ISBN: 0538734302, as a control in this experiment and will refer to it as the control or textbook in this article.

Textbooks.org Review:

The first site we are going to review is the new kid on the block Textbooks.org. According to alligator.org the site was launched in December 2011 and has already had 7,000 visitors and 5,000 book searches, not a bad first month. The site provided quick up to date results that matched other textbook search engine sites. It also provided coupons that could be applied to textbooks for a few textbook sites that showed up in the results.

Textbook.org scored 29 out of 50, it lost some points for not having any additional advanced features that would allow you to refine your search to include or exclude factors like condition or price, which other sites offered.

Cheap-Textbooks.com Review:

Although Cheap-Textbooks.com looks like it could be in a back-to-the-future movie it provided quick results and clearly stated the information for the textbook we were looking for.

Cheap-Textbooks.com scored 23 out of 50, it lost a lot of points for not providing any coupons or additional features to help us refine the search even further.

MyCollegeTextbooks.com / CheapTextbooks.org Review:

I grouped these sites because they appear to use the same search engine, their appearances are almost identical, and they link back to the same site CampusBooks.com when you click on the ‘view all results’ button.

These sites scored 9 out of 50. Even though these sites rank highly in google they are mere shells of other textbook search engine sites providing very basic results.

CampusBooks.com Review:

It seems only fair to review CampusBooks.com seeing as the previously mentioned sites are linked to it.

After being very disappointed with the reviews for maycollegetextbooks.com and cheaptextbook.org which are connected to CampusBooks.com. I was very surprised by how well it was laid out, and how easy it was to refine our textbook search, with clearly labeled categories. It also provided coupons which were automatically calculated to our textbook price and it provided results from a vast array of textbook sellers. CampusBooks.com scored a perfect 50 out of 50.

BuyUsedCollegeBooks.net Review:

BuyUsedCollegeBooks.net is a very attractive looking site, but we don’t judge a textbook site by it’s cover here.

BuyUsedCollegeBooks.net scored 17 out of 50. Even though it provided a good layout for the viewer the fact that the results were not priced lowest to highest, and even worse the results were not as up to date as other sites really hurt the score for this site.

BookFinder.com Review:

BookFinder.com is a site that I have herd mentioned a lot so my exceptions were high.

BookFinder.com scored a 22 out of 50, it would have scored much higher if it were not for how confusing it was to view the results. The way it presented the information hurt the other scores; for example, it does include coupons and extra information, but it all bends together making it difficult to find these extras.

BigWords.com Review:

BigWords.com is another site that I hear mentioned a lot. It’s a site that has a modern appearance and if you stop to read some of the content, it is also very humorous.

BigWords.com is very entreating, but it came up a little short as far as retuning the best results, it scored 23 out of 50. BigWords.com provided a coupon that it claims to be exclusive, but other sites provided a coupon that matched theirs. The results were slow and not as current as other sites.

DirectTextbook.com Review:

DirctTextbook.com is yet another site that came highly recommended, it’s home page is simple and allows you to search immediately.

There were hardly any faults with DirectTextbook.com search and the results are a score of 48 out of 50. The only issues I had was with the layout, it was a little cramped for me and the additional information it provides is displayed on a separate page. Overall, it did an excellent job returning textbook prices, coupons, and it gives you some great features that allow you to refine your textbook search even further.

AffordABook.com Review:

AffordABook.com also has a simple interface that allows you to start searching immediately.

Although AffordABook.com is nicely laid out it only provided nine results, no coupons, and no features that would allow us to refine our search. AffordABook.com scored 16 out of 50.

Top Site

Our Dirt Cheap College Textbooks award goes to CampusBooks.com scoring a perfect 50 out of 50, even though I didn’t care for the fact that two lower scoring sites are associated to it, it really did an excellent job finding and presenting cheap college textbooks for us. The final standings are as follows:

I really liked the top two sites and their scores are very close, in the end it will be up to you to chose which one you prefer, but I hope that this article has helped. The textbook industry is constantly changing and these results in turn will change as well. This will be especially true if apple gets involved, which mashable.com is reporting they intend to do in the near future. If this does occur it could have dramatic results for textbook prices, seeing what the itunes store did for music prices, one could only imagine what an apple textbook store could do for textbook prices. And who doesn’t want an excuse to go buy an ipad!
