Monument Ave. (1998, Ted Demme)

By Andrew Wickliffe on  From thestopbutton.com
An utterly depressing Mean Streets knock-off–but beautifully directed by Ted Demme, who manages to make it both derivative and affecting–which might not have much potential, but certainly has the cast for it. Even though Denis Leary is over forty as the guy who wants to get out but they keep pulling him back in–and, honesty, if the film had taken Leary’s age into account, it would have been a lot better–he’s real good. It helps Demme shoots it so well, but the movie’s got a great cast...Read Full Story

Hell On Wheels - First Impressions

By crazylegs99 on  From tvminestrone.blogspot.com
I've been following AMC's new western, Hell On Wheels since it began a couple of weeks ago. Although I felt a little shortchanged after the first episode, 'Immoral Mathematics' and 'A New Birth Of Freedom' have since started to win me over. I'd like to present a little analysis of my own.First of all, the cast. Anson Mount plays Cullen Bohannan, a former confederate soldier on a quest to knock off all the people (Union soldiers) responsible for his wife's death, the circumstances of which...Read Full Story

Con Air (1997, Simon West), the extended edition

By Andrew Wickliffe on  From thestopbutton.com
I loathed Con Air back when I first saw it. I’ve only seen it that one time, opening night thirteen years ago. And many of my complaints at the time still hold true–Nicolas Cage is awful, John Cusack is awful (worse, his jokes fall flat), Simon West is a terrible director (but thirteen years later he’s not as bad as the mainstream directors who’ve followed) and the music is bad. All those complaints do hold true. The writing’s really bad in parts too, mostly as how it relates to Cage and his...Read Full Story

Not Another Shirley Temple!

By Alejandro Cole on
What child hasn't watched Harry Potter or High School Musical and wondered how to become a child actor . It looks like fun, you will get to meet big movie stars, and get paid! The reality is, as with any career in the entertainment industry, it takes a lot of talent and much more luck. There's always the possibility you could turn up for an open casting, the Director sees you like a young Olivier or Mirren and you are off on the way to stardom and riches. Unfortunately this is the real world...Read Full Story
