Slick moves in Colombia pay off

Colombian-French politician Ingrid Betancourt, who ran for president of Colombia in 2002 and was kidnapped in February of that year, has finally been released, along with three Americans, Marc Gonsalves, Thomas Howes, and Keith Stansell. The three Americans had been held captive longer than any other American hostages in the world, captured after their drug surveillance aircraft had been shot down by Colombian rebels.

Betancourt had been elected to the Colombian Chamber of Representatives and the Colombian Senate before running for president. She was kidnapped while campaigning in an area heavily populated with guerrillas.

The rescue plan went off flawlessly, after Colombian military intelligence infiltrated the guerrillas and tricked the local commander in charge of the hostages into thinking they were taking the hostages to the guerrillas' leader. Nobody was told that the infiltrators were really Colombian military until everybody, including two of the guerrillas accompanying the hostages was airborne on heavily disguised military helicopters.

In U.S. News, the stock market is only open for a short trading day due to tomorrow's Fourth of July holiday. And it's probably a good thing, too, with oil closing at $143.57, the Dow closing at 11,215.51, and a report out this morning that June saw a loss of another 62,000 jobs.
