According to Wikipedia.org: Color blindness, or color vision deficiency, in humans is the inability to perceive differences between some or all colors that other people can distinguish. It is most often of genetic nature, but may also occur because of eye, nerve, or brain damage, or due to exposure to certain chemicals. The English chemist John Dalton in 1798 published the first scientific paper on the subject, "Extraordinary facts relating to the vision of colours", after the realization of his own color blindness; because of Dalton's work, the condition is sometimes called Daltonism, although this term is now used for a type of color blindness called deuteranopia.
While screening tests can only find out a color vision problem, detailed quantitative tests can determine its severity. During a comprehensive eye exam, you will always receive the Ishihara Color Vision Test for color blindness test, which is the most widely applied screening test invented by the Japanese ophthalmologist Shinobu Ishihara. Here are two pieces of software that sound interesting. Color Oracle and Sim Daltonism supposedly let you see the computer screen the way a color blind person sees it. Now, I haven’t tried them out myself. This is because I’m red/green color blind myself, so there’s not much point…
