Fridge Freezers –
Before the introduction of refrigeration people had a challenging time with keeping food fresh so they just took what they needed from their gardens for every meal, and kept foods salted so they would keep fresh longer. Nevertheless because of poor cooling conditions, cooked foods that were not eaten right away often spoiled and had to be discarded. Ice blocks taken from rivers, streams and lakes seemed to help keep foods like eggs and milk cold and preserved them longer from dangerous bacteria. Nonetheless, even in the finest of icehouses it was hard to keep cold temperatures. When the ice began to melt temperatures would rise higher than what was thought to be safe to keep food from going bad. Moreover, some of the goods that were kept in ice to keep them cold would experience a type of freezer burn, which made food inedible as well.
The introduction of the modern day refrigerator went leaps and bounds in keeping food from going bad, but even those early creations were like the ice blocks in where they were not always able to keep an even temperature to keep food from forming bacteria. By the mid 1960′s refrigeration became safer because of improvements. Therefore, food kept in the refrigerator did not often spoil if eaten in a reasonable period unless the fridge broke down. If a refrigerator was not keeping food cold it was easy to spot, however slight increases in temperature was frequently not seen. Even though technology has gone far in designing more efficient refrigerators, changes in the refrigerator and Freezer Temperature are still a health worry.
In order to properly slow the growth of bacteria refrigerators need to maintain a temperature of 40 degrees Fahrenheit or lower while freezer need to remain at 0 degrees Fahrenheit to keep food properly frozen. Even as little as a degree rise in temperature can cause bacteria to multiply at twice the desired rate spoiling some foods in as little as an hour or two.
For this reason, it is crucial to monitor your refrigerator and Freezer Temperature and be sure the temperature is maintained at a safe level. One method of doing this is purchasing thermometers for the refrigerator and the freezer part of your refrigerator. These thermometers must be monitored consistently and any change in temperature should warrant close observation.
With some of the latest advances in technology, some brands and models of refrigerators and freezers have built in thermometers that are not only designed to keep track of your refrigerator or Freezer Temperature but, will also alert you to rises in temperatures. Some actually offer digital readouts right on the appliances door that tell you what the temperature is continually.
If you discover that the temperature in your refrigerator or freezer is raising you should get the food stored inside of it in a place where it can be stored in the proper temperature and then look over the troubleshooting part of the manual, or phone a service technician and have your fridge looked at and repaired.
Modern refrigerators do an excellent job by keeping food from going bad longer and better than before, however you still have to do your bit to be sure that your refrigeration unit is maintaining the correct temperature.
