Critical Congenital Heart Disease (CCHD) is an insidious killer of infants, and the most prevalent birth defect. Approximately 1 of every 100 babies is born with a congenital heart defect. CHDs are the leading cause of infant death from birth defects, claiming the lives of more than 4,000 babies in the U.S. each year. A simple, non-invasive test in the newborn nursery can help clinicians detect possible heart problems. Some babies born with a heart defect can appear healthy at first and can be sent home with their families before their heart defect is detected. Visit www.1in100.org for more information.
