During one particularly dramatic moment, Rep. Joe Wilson, a Republican from the 2nd District of South Carolina, shouted "You lie!" when Obama stated that no illegal aliens would be covered by his plan.
Rep. Joe Wilson shouts "You life!" at Barack Obama during the president's speech to both Houses of Congress. (Getty Images) It was a singular moment from a long summer that has seen many angry words exchanged on both sides. It is worth it to remember how many presidents have addressed both houses of Congress in the past, on very controversial matters, and yet none saw a member of Congress yelling at the president as Wilson did tonight.
Whether pundits and the public will judge Wilson's actions as intemperate or brave will depend both on their political point of view, and on how the resulting news coverage treats Wilson. Expect right-wing outlets to treat Wilson as a modern day Paul Revere, shouting out the truth for all to hear, while left-wing media organizations will attempt to portray Wilson as a badly-behaved boor.
