Kevin Ring Trial: Jury reaches a decision on one charge
October 13, 2009The jury in the Kevin Ring case has been deliberating for six days. This afternoon they reached a verdict on one of the eight counts against the former congressional staffer for former Senator John Ashcroft (R-Missouri) and former Rep. John Doolittle (R-California). Ring became a lobbyist for Jack Abramoff and has been described as his deputy. He appears in the CNMI billing records over 250 times.
According to AP, the jury of seven women and five men reached a decision on the charge involving Julie Doolittle, former Rep. John Doolittle's wife. From the story:
The jury for Kevin Ring decided Tuesday to keep secret its verdict on the one count for now after being directed by U.S. District Judge Ellen Segal Huvelle to resume deliberations Wednesday.
The charge involves a payment of $5,000 to a credit union account controlled by the wife of former California Republican Rep. John Doolittle.
Ring is accused of providing thousands of dollars worth of drinks, meals and tickets to sporting events and concerts to the offices of two congressmen and to Justice Department officials over a four-year span.
Regarding the other seven counts AP reported:
On the still-undecided counts, jurors sent a note to the judge saying their deliberations had been contentious and that arguments had shown no sign of movement toward a verdict.
Huvelle told the jury that they were required to continue deliberations.
This post will be updated as the story unfolds and the verdict is announced.
Ring was charged with conspiracy, paying illegal gratuities, and six counts of honest services wire fraud.
Earlier today the AP reported that the jury asked Judge Ellen Huevelle a question. From the article:
It is not surprising that the jury is taking a long time to come to reach a verdict. The jury received detailed jury instructions and the binders containing evidence that the prosecution compiled. It must take a long time just to sort through all of the documents provided to the jury. A jury was told Tuesday there were no legal limits on the dollar value of tickets and meals that lobbyists working with influence peddler Jack Abramoff could give to public officials.
The National Journal made this statement today:
The National Journal gives an excellent breakdown of the charges against Ring and what the jury would have to weigh to find Ring guilty. Here is also Part I of the Ring indictment and Part II of the Ring indictment. How the trial will turn out, no one can know, but it is possible Ring will be found guilty on some counts but not others. In Judge Ellen Huvelle's instructions, the jury is specifically warned not to let the verdict on one count impact another.
"The fact that you may find the defendant guilty or not guilty on any one count of the indictment should not control or influence your verdict with respect to the other counts of the indictment," she said.
