On Friday, it was announced that an amphibious warship was being named after the late Rep. John Murtha, and there were mixed reactions to the move, according to a feature on the Navy Times.
On the one hand, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi expressed that Murtha deserved this honor and praised the Navy for its decision. In effect, Pelosi shares that it is but fitting that someone who supported American troops received such an honor, and said: “Whether on the battlefield, or on the bedside, he thanked them for their courage, listened to their concerns, and asked them for comment — and he answered their needs, and responded to their calls, whether it was for body armor, up-armored vehicles… radios, you name it… In those minutes [together], he bonded with them especially because he would share his own personal military service with them, and cared for them as a father. They knew it, and they returned his respect.”
Navy Secretary Ray Mabus also showered the Murtha with praise.
However, some readers had a different Murtha in mind; they remembered the Murtha who opposed the Iraqi War and accused the Marines at one point of killing Iraqis “in cold blood.” And it is for this reason that they do not agree that Murtha was deserving of such honor as to have a U.S. Navy warship named after him.
According to the feature, a Facebook group has even been created expressing this very sentiment, called “People Against Naming A Navy Ship USS Murtha”. As of Monday, the page has attracted 1,336 members.
