SAN JUAN (Reuters) - Authorities in Puerto Rico on Friday ordered the evacuation of hundreds more residents from homes around a huge fire at an oil depot which spewed a column of toxic black smoke into the sky near the capital San Juan. Some 130 firefighters, backed by National Guard troops, were still trying to put out the massive fire, hours after an early morning explosion triggered the blaze at the Caribbean Petroleum Corp. storage facility at Bayamon. After initially destroying 11 tanks at the 40-tank site, the fire spread to at least six more, containing products such as jet fuel, bunker fuel and ... Read Full Story

An explosion at a fuel storage site sent earthquake-force shock waves across Puerto Rico's capital Friday and set more than a dozen tanks on fire, sending up a tower of inky smoke that forced airliners to alter flight paths. Seemingly miraculously, no one was reported killed by the blast at Caribbean Petroleum Corp. in the suburb of Bayamon. The cause was unknown. The explosion at 12:30 a.m. was the equivalent of a 2.8 magnitude earthquake, according to the Puerto Rico Seismic Network. It shook people out of bed across metropolitan San Juan and shattered windows across the bay in colonial Old San Juan, one ... Read Full Story

Labor unions are calling for an island-wide strike and a march near the capital on Thursday to protest government layoffs in Puerto Rico, where more than 20,000 public employees have been dismissed as the island struggles to pull out of a three-year recession. At least 100,000 protesters are expected to converge on Plaza las Americas, the Caribbean's largest shopping center, in the biggest of several demonstrations across the U.S. territory, according to organizers. "A huge mass of people will paralyze the country," said Juan Vera, a spokesman for the coalition All of Puerto Rico for Puerto Rico. The protests are a response to the ... Read Full Story
