It's no secret that i am a big fab of State Senator John Boccieri and that I am pretty sitting around just waiting for the day he decides to run for Congress. I wrote on a number of occasions on the blog that Boccieri, is considering a run against long time congressman Ralph Regula in 2008 and about why I believe the Iraq war veteran is the person that will defeat Regula and end his 18 term career.

It seems that today,we are one step closer to seeing that happen as my friend Senator Boccieri has filed papers with the Federal Election Commission as reported in today's Canton Repository.
State Sen. John Boccieri, an Iraq War veteran, will challenge longtime Congressman Ralph Regula, if he chooses to run for re-election, for the 16th District seat in 2008.
Regula has not yet announced if he will run for a 19th term, but his decision could be accelerated now that Boccieri is raising money for what is expected to be an expensive contest.
Long expected to run, Boccieri, D-New Middletown, filed his candidacy paperwork with the Federal Elections Commission in Washington on Tuesday. Read MoreThe GOP is saying publicly that they don't believe Regula is vulnerable and that they are not worried. That, however, couldn't be further from the truth. In 2006, Regula failed to get anywhere near his normal level of support in either the primary or general elections. In November, the congressman recieved only 59% of the vote district wide against novice Thomas Shaw, who didn't even raise enough money to have to file a report. Regula will not be so lucky with Boccieri, who in addition to his unbelievable resume, is also one of the best fundraisers in the buckeye state.
This seat was alos listed by the White House (Rove) as being on the protect list in 2008 from the now famous GSA powerpoint presentation. So let, the Ohio GOP spin as much as they want, they are concerned, if scared, about the prospect of the loosing this seat in '08.
I am really looking forward to this race next year. As I have told Senator Boccieri personally, I just waiting for him to make the decision to run and then I am absolutely going to work for him immediately.
