A federal jury in Tucson has convicted an associate of former Arizona congressman Rick Renzi of conspiracy and embezzlement charges but acquitted a second of insurance fraud and conspiracy.
The verdicts were delivered late Thursday afternoon after a nearly three-week trial. The case is tied to allegations that the former congressman looted his family insurance business to fund his campaigns and personal expenses.
His lawyer says Andrew Beardall was acquitted of conspiracy and two counts of insurance fraud. He was the insurance firm's president from late 2002 through 2003.
Former company accountant Dwayne Lequire was convicted of conspiracy and eight of 10 counts of embezzlement.
Renzi will be tried later in the insurance case and on unrelated corruption charges.
