Rep. Bartlett Takes Step To Correct CPSIA

A new bill introduced by Rep. Roscoe Bartlett, MD, seeks to correct the unintended consequences of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act of 2008.
The bill, HR 968 is a companion to S 374 introduced earlier this year by Senator Jim DeMint.
Among other things, the bill will:
- Extend the Feb. 10 compliance deadline for six months, to allow comments and practical implementation of CPSIA
- Allow smaller manufacturers to use testing done by their suppliers on component parts for lead content certification
- Protect second-hand sellers, such as yard sales, consignment shops and thrift stores from liability
- Prevent retroactive enforcement of CPSIA from detroying products legal to sell prior to Feb. 10
Naturally, I’ll keep an eye on this development to see how far the bills go…
