It’s not Bright Eyes, but it sure sounds like it. “It” would be the new eponymous solo release by Conor Oberst. I’m a huge Bright Eyes fan, as this blog would attest to, but I had no idea this record was coming out.
I’m usually up on these things. For example, I waited three agonizingly long months for Wilco’s Sky Blue Sky after hearing word it would be released. But my head was in the sand for this one, and little kids built sand castles on top of me.
The good news is that you can listen to the entire album stream at conoroberst.com/album/. I like what I hear so far, although I detect some “commercial radio” stylings. Maybe it’s just me, but this could be a breakthrough record for Oberst.
In any event, Conor has come a long way from recording low-fi tracks in his parents’ basement in his prepubescent years. Let’s rewind the clock with a song below from Oberst’s 1994 release Here’s to Special Treatment.
He doesn’t sound old enough to say “bullshit” in this song but I guess his parents were lenient…
