Michael Your Questions About Relieve Constipation In Cats

Michael asks…

What relieves constipation in a cat?

I had to take my cat to the vet because he hadn't gone number 2 in 3 days. The poor guy had to get an enema. He went, of course, but now 2 days after that, he hasn't gone number 2 in 2 days. The vet said try plain pumpkin as some cats like it & it helps w/ digestion - nothing doing. I bought cat grass. My cat looked at it like, what the hell is this - nothing doing. He finally ate decent yesterday, and has gone number 1 w/ no problem. He ate a good breakfast this morning - still no number 2. He is drinking water like normal. Anyone out there have any suggestions on what else I can do other than taking him back to the vet for another enema? He's had no problems w/ going number 2 for his 7 years until last week.

Hallsman answers:

Feed dry kibble soaked in warm water to force the cat to take in more water. Also, see if your cat will lick up some Vaseline (petroleum jelly, most cats like it). If so, give him a teaspoon a day as a laxative. If he doesn't like it, try warming it and putting a few drops of tuna juice in it. If that still doesn't do the trick, there is a product called Laxatone you can get from your vet or most pet stores.

Finally, if he is a tidy groomer, his problem may be with hairballs gumming up his works. Brush him thoroughly as often as he will allow to help minimize the hair he ingests.

Donna Your Questions About Relieve Constipation In Cats

Donna asks…

Has anyone got a good remedy for a constipated cat?

My 16yr old Tom cat has been on lactuose for almost 2yrs now as he gets very constipated. But recently his medication is failing him. He has cost an absolute fortune as he has a few more medical problems. I would like to ask if anyone has ever given their cat any other constipation remedy, eg milk of magnesia? on the advice of their vet only. He has had badly congested bowels twice in the past and it costs almost £100 a time to have the vet knock him out and relieve him. Please help. If I don't find some other form of medication. I know by the end of the week, he will have to have another vet visit.

Hallsman answers:

Wholegrain rice, boiled well and some steamed chicken cut into tiny chunks. He may, as cats do, just look at you as if you're stupid, but you never know. Also make sure he has plenty of fresh water available.

Mark Your Questions About Relieve Constipation In Cats

Mark asks…

I live in Dalian, China. my cat needs a Doctor badly due to constipation. NO VETS HERE. What can i do?

Poor thing strains and cries trying to relieve himself.
There is one "animal specialist" (a man in doctors suit with clipboard) and he wants to slice open jj (my cat) and remove the poop from his belly. i need some serious help.

Hallsman answers:

Hi
If your cat is blocked it is a big problem and needs vets attention
For constipation you can give some mineral oil/other oils or 1/4 tab of a laxative that has ingredients something similar to this

Please look to feed canned foods instead of dry to prevent this from happening again

Richard Your Questions About Relieve Constipation In Cats

Richard asks…

There's something wrong with my cat?

She hasn't had a bowel movement in at least a week and this morning i noticed her nose was dripping. I'm thinking she might not be urinating either, but it's hard to tell, as I have another cat that shares the same litter box. Does anyone know what I can do to relieve her of her constipation? She i acting very strange.

Hallsman answers:

If your cat hasn't used the litter box in over a week she will need to be seen by a vet. The dripping nose is another problem all together. Make her an appointment and get her in quickly. There is nothing you can do or give her that you can buy at the store. Human meds are dangerous and can harm or kill a cat. She needs to see a vet and very soon.

Huh??Well, I think he'll be okay because i don't think cats like the smell of medicine and decide not to eat stuff like that but you should take him to the vet's just in case. But if the cat inhaled the COTTON then it's pretty bad.

Carol Your Questions About Relieve Constipation In Cats

Carol asks…

im desperate for any ideas?

for about 3 months now ive been experiencing abdominal pain. For a while it was constant but now i get what i call "pain attacks" about 10 times a day. the pain first started on my middle left side, but the next day moved to my upper right side where it has remained since. the pain also appears sometimes in my lower right side and seldom in various areas on my left side. the pain is accompanied with alternating constipation and diarrhea, severe periods (to the point where i have to be knocked out with sleeping medicine), some weight loss, and bouts of fatigue. since im only 16 it takes a long time to find pediatric specialists and they are always fully booked. i have been to the emergency room my regular doctor a gastric specialist a pediatric surgeon and a urologist. i have had xrays, cat scans, ultrasounds, and blood tests which have all come back completely normal. the pain is so bad that i walk hunched over and when i get an attack i fall to the floor. im just looking for ideas. please
oh and no pain medicine will relieve it not even loratabs.

Hallsman answers:

Hello,

Well, I suppose "abdominal migraine," see http://www.abdopain.com/Abdominal-Migraine.html

... And "recurrent abdominal pain syndrome," see http://www.abdopain.com/recurrent-abdominal-pain-syndrome.html

... Have been considered ?

Best wishes,

David Your Questions About Relieve Constipation In Cats

David asks…

I've had this massive pain in my pelvic region on the left side, it keeps getting worse?

I had some massive back pain two weeks ago, I woke up and went to the ER, they did an Cat Scan, they said it was a kidney infection, I took the medicine but I've had this pain for uite sometime now along with chronic constipation, a skipped period, massive stress. I took a pg test even though I'm fixed and it was negative. Its chronic pain sometimes doubling me over and I still have the massive back pain. They did the urinalysis at the ER but they didn't say I was pg. I don't want to go back to the ER for a number of reasons but I think I'm going to have to. Nothing relieves the pain not even high strength naproxen or oxycodones. What could this be??

Hallsman answers:

This sounds to me (as another "fixed" female) like an ovarian cyst or an adhesion.

Although it's a controversial statement, having the fallopian tubes ligated (or blocked, or whatever) may disrupt the normal blood flow to the area, making "fixed" women more prone to cysts. It's called Post Tubal-Ligation Syndrome. Most websites that address it can sound a little paranoid, hysterical, and lawsuit-happy, but this one might help http://www.tubal.org/symptoms_of_pts.htm.

There are two main types of ovarian cysts: one which occurs when the follicle (egg sac) doesn't rupture properly, so the egg stays on the ovary's surface; and one in which the follicle ruptures properly, but then seals shut and fills with fluid. This second type can grow large, torque or twist, or even burst and cause massive pain. This has happened to me twice, both times requiring hospitalization due to infection and pain.

Not all ovarian cysts result in problems; most of them go away on their own, but some women just seem more prone to problems with them.

There's also a condition called Adhesions, in which scar tissue forms fibrous bands between tissues and organs after surgery.

My suggestion is that you see a gynecologist and ask about the above two possibilities.

You don't mention whether an ultrasound was done of your pelvic area, so it may be helpful to you to have one.
