Top 10 Toasters

The idea of turning bread into toast is not a new concept. In fact, it dates back at least until the Roman Empire, when they discovered and conquered societies that toasted their bread. The modern word for toast comes from the Latin "Torrere, Tostum", meaning to scorch or burn. The concept spread as far north as Britain, and then to America. Before electricity was used, methods of toasting included hot hearthstones, toasting forks similar to the forks we use to cook hot dogs over a fire, and hinged bread holders that could be used to swing bread over a fire. Local blacksmiths often invented their own version of the bread toaster and embellished them with their own designs. There were even non-electrical sandwich toasters, devices that could seal in a sandwich and toast it over a fire.

Electrical appliances did not entirely eliminate non-electrical toasting and cooking gadgets, which remain popular with campers and people who cook outside regularly. Most kitchen toasters can handle two or four pieces of toast at a time, while 6-slot or 8-slot toasters are popular in restaurants or other establishments that require a lot of toast.
