Arby's Goes Green

            Roast beef is going green.

Um, maybe I should rephrase that. This post has nothing whatsoever to do with bad beef – in fact, quite the opposite.

The restaurant known for great roast beef and great prices (from the “5 for 5.95” menu to Arbys coupons ) wants to be known for its commitment to the environment. Arby’s is following in the footsteps of fast food giants McDonald’s and Starbucks and is going “green” to help protect the environment. The chain recently opened its first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Certified restaurant is Magnolia, Texas.

All Arby’s corporate restaurants have been recycling cardboard boxes and cooking oil for years, but this franchise’s new, green facility goes the extra mile.

Everything from the kitchen to the parking lot is designed to be earth-friendly.  At least 35% of the restaurant’s power comes from renewable power, and the exterior of the building features a thermoplastic membrane roof to assist in reducing the heat island effect, which can increase summertime peak energy demand, air conditioning costs, air pollution, greenhouse gas emissions and water quality. The windows are solar glass, and the store’s drought-tolerant landscaping requires minimal watering and maintenance. The parking lot even offers preferrd parking spots to drivers of fuel-efficient vehicles.

“We built the first LEED restaurant because it is smart in design and a smart way to do business.... Saving energy and conserving water results in reduced utility costs,” says Arby's green representative Cathie Koch.

"We'll take key learnings from this location to help us understand more about energy efficiency and eco-friendly construction and design,” added Tom Garrett, president and CEO of Arby's Restaurant Group Inc.

Next time you use Arby’s coupons , you may notice a few earth-friendly changes at your local store – from recycling in-store to redesigning restaurants, Arby’s is making a commitment to protect the planet, and I couldn’t be happier to see that more corporations are holding themselves accountable when it comes to sustainable business practices.
