Entrance to Tivoli Gardens
Joseph Hollick
In 1167 Copenhagen was a tiny village called “Havn” which king Valdemar I gave to his trustee, the bishop Absalon of Roskilde. Since then it gradually grew to be the first city of Denmark, in part because the harbour of Roskilde became inaccessible to the larger trading ships. In 1417 Copenhagen became the capital of Denmark. It’s now by far the largest and most important town in Denmark, with numerous Museums and the hippest Nightlife in the country.

The New Harbour is nearly the oldest part of the harbour. In former times the district was full of crime and prostitutes, in the presence Nyhavn is an amusement district with many coffeeshops. All harbour tours start from here. The house number 20 is the birthplace of Hans Christan Andersen.
Go to Christianshavn for a quieter drink, with similar views.

Christiania
Edit This
Christiania is a 'free state' inside Copenhagen. Originally a military base, hippy squaters moved into the area when the militray abandoned it and formed a community based on cooperative ideals.
Part commune, part social experiment, Christiania is home to an array of uniquely designed houses and market stalls selling all maner of good. The open sale of hash on pusher street, however is probably the communities most famous sight.
Booming land prices are now the biggest threat to the free state. The government seems convinced to reclaim the site more..

_________Museums
Edit This
Copenhagen has always been a city where art could flourish. Today Danish are known for their reductive functional design with takes objects to their most essential form. It seems almost impossible that this is the same that in the 19th century was swept by the Romantic movement that leaded to the so called Danish Golden Age. In Copenhagen, more than 50 museums all tell their own story about the land, the city and it’s people. Each story different and none complete. If you should venture to try to see them all, there is a special ticket which allows you to see as many as possible in one, two or three days. Some museums also have special days when no admission is charged. Outside Copenhagen Louisiana and ARKEN are also worth a visit.

This Museum, 20 km (12 miles) south of Copenhagen, looks like an huge vessel that has stranded on the coast of Denmark. As is a trend among today’s museum builders, architect Søren Robert Lund made ARKEN the showpiece of its exhibitions. The museum was opened in 1996 and has its focal point on all forms of Danish, Scandinavian and international art from 1945 and onward. The building is organised around the imposing main room which, like a huge banana penetrates the other spaces.

Also a visit to this museum is an experience in itself. Louisiana has grown in a circle at the coast of Øresund. Pavilions in different stiles are bound together like a necklace to shelter a unique collection of modern art. Especially the Giacometti is a site in itself. When weather allows you can have a picnic in the central clearing. But even when rain pours down it is a place of interesting harmonics and contrasts.

Thorvaldsen museum

Bertel Thorvaldsen (1770-1844) lived over forty years in Rome. As sculptor he can easily withstand comparison with contemporaries like Antonio Canova or François Rude. At his death, he left his city of birth a vast collection of sculptures and paintings. The neo-classical sculptor now rests among this collections in the central court. The museum itself is a work of art with painted walls and ceilings based on Roman and Etruscan excavations. In these dark chambers, Thorvaldsens white marble sculptures standout in a way they were intended. In the basement, one can see the drawing more..

___________Nightlife and Entertainment
Edit This
Dollhouse of Copenhagen
Dollhouse of Copenhagen
Nightlife in Copenhagen changes fast and starts late. Most clubs only begin to fill up around midnight. New clubs and bars spring up regularly. Some of the newer additions include: Subsonic, featuring a 'preserved' Bier Keller corner, a large dance floor and a perfect copy of a SAS lounge with original aircraft seats. The music is predominantly 80’s dance. Also new is Fever in the old X-Ray club, which is a Hip hop and R&B club. A relaxed lounge area makes it a good place for an earlier start, with the dance floor picking up around midnight Friday/Saturday only.
For a completely different experience, there's Base Camp, a hangar like venue on the newly revamped military island, Holmen. As well as a nightclub and 'The north's biggest restaurant' with 600 seats, it's got an outdoor grill area with live music.
An interesting pre club bar is Stereo Bar around Israels Plads, which offers 70’s retro decor easy listening and lava lamps. Music ranges from trip hop, drum & bass to latin/jazz. Ideal Bar, in Vesterbro is also an early starter, which picks up speed as the night wears on, developing into a fully fledged dance club featuring funk, latin, easy listening and swing beat.
Clubs and venues :
Vega, one of the city's most characteristic venues, features both big names from the rock and dance world and underground acts on it's smaller stage. Based in a 1950's trade union building, the interior has been retained right up to the fifties glass light shades giving it a unique atmosphere, from its zigzag tiled floors to its 60’s mural decked bar. For a more underground feel, Stengade 30, in Nørrebro features the best of Danish and international rock and dance acts, usually with an all-night club to follow. Also in Nørrebro, Rust, a primarily live music/dance venue has an outdoor yard and bar. Its packed club nights have a relaxed free-style dance-floor policy.
Pure dance clubs are also thick on the ground, Fever, Slide and Nasa, all in Baron Boltens Gård are worth a visit. However, as Nasa is a private club, it may be hard for visitors to get in - admission are preferably granted non-members who look like models or money. Right next to Tivoli in the old Jazzhouse Slukefter there's Club Mantra which play perhaps the best R&B and hip-hop in town. A luxurious interior, white leather sofas and a panoramic mural of Copenhagen at dusk, combined with the beats makes this THE place for cool Copenhageners. Over in Østerbro there's the more established Park Diskotek, the relaxed home of happy house. Copenhagen's gay scene is loosely based around Sebastian and the popular three storey Pan Disco, as the focal point for dancing.
You might try to use the mobile night life guide Mobileclubbing that also lists all the gay clubs. It is found on your mobile phone on wap.mobileclubbing.net.
For jazz, Copenhagen Jazz House is the best option. With the renewed interest in new Danish jazz, this intimate showcase club features international and Danish acts, with a club night on weekends is popular with the younger Copenhagen jazz crowd.
