Tom Bevan over at the RCP breathlessly reports (parroted, of course, by Lickspittle Drudge) on a new CNN showing that, after six months, more people rate the Obama administration as “a failure” than Bush’s at six months. Of course, I DEFY you to name a single initiative or accomplishment of Bush’s first six months… and “clearing brush at the Crawford Ranch” doesn’t count. One word for the neocons and wingnuts regarding Sonia Sotomayor’s 61-38 confirmation to be an associate justice on the US Supreme Court . Suck it. Oh, wait. That’s two words. If you thought Caribou Barbie was gonna go away, or that ... Read Full Story

Written by Stephen Menendian and Brookes Hammock Judge Sonia Sotomayor of the Second Circuit Court of Appeals is the nation’s first Latina nominated to the United States Supreme Court, and would be only the third woman to join that bench. Shortly after her nomination, in response to a speech Sotomayor made in which she claimed “that a wise Latina woman” would “reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life,” Rush Limbaugh and others called her a " reverse-racist ." That charge emerged again in the wake of the Supreme Court’s ruling in Ricci v. DeStefano . In Ricci, white ... Read Full Story

A new nationwide poll also showed that a majority of Americans now believe the Senate should confirm Sotomayor. Most Senate Democrats and Republicans, however, continued to express sharply differing opinions of Sotomayor's experience and temperament during the full chamber's ... Read Full Story

By Andrew Grant-Thomas “During the campaign, [Obama] promised to nominate someone who's got the heart and the empathy to recognize what it's like to be a young, teenaged mom. The implication is that our judges today don't have that. Do you realize how astounding that is? The empathy to understand what it's like to be poor, to be African-American or gay or disabled or old…. I believe that standard is antithetical to the proper role of a judge. Judge Sotomayor… you must demonstrate that you will strictly interpret the Constitution and our laws and will not be swayed by your personal biases or your ... Read Full Story

I was one of those who opposed the nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the Supreme Court, mainly because the pick was based on race and gender rather than merit and she was disingenuous and obfuscatory at her confirmation hearings. Well, the Court still hasn’t decided any cases argued with Justice Sotomayor on the bench — and the first [...]

She will be placed on the US Supreme Court, as should have Miguel Estrada when President Bush nominated him as a Latino candidate for the DC Circuit Court – one of the highest courts in the land. The difference being, Estrada was attacked, and Sotomayor will be handled gently by the weak Republican leaders in the US Senate Confirmation Hearings. My biggest concern is simple: “Will a white man before the high bench be forever changed in America...
