Do you drink wine? Ever wonder if you could recycle rather than throw away these little wine stoppers? You can! Cork is an environmentally sound natural resource. Taking the bark from the cork trees does not kill the tree and in Portugal (where over 50% of cork oak trees are), the cork oak tree is prohibited from being cut down. A recent PricewaterhouseCoopers study found that carbon dioxide emissions, a key factor in global warming, resulting from the life cycle of a screwcap are 24 times higher than a natural cork stopper. Cork is being used in "green" flooring, insulation, automotive gaskets and much ... Read Full Story

Amorim & Irmãos of Portugal , the world’s largest producer of wine corks, and the company’s sales offices in the U.S.– Amorim Cork America and Portocork America –have instituted a pilot program in California and the Pacific northwest to recycle natural cork wine closures. Known as ReCORK America, the program will collect used and surplus corks from winery tasting rooms, bottling lines and quality assurance laboratories. Collection sites will be established at key retailers and restaurants in large metropolitan areas as well. Because of natural cork’s ability to retain carbon dioxide (CO2) from its inception as a wine cork through its reuse as a ... Read Full Story

Fota Wildlife Park is touted to be one of Europe’s most modern wildlife parks. It is opened in 1983 as a conservation park with well over 70 species of exotic wildlife running around in their natural surroundings. It is just an expression, folks. They ... Read Full Story

I suppose after you settle in for a fine gourmet dinner and pop open a bottle of vintage wine,   you simply toss the cork into the trash can, right? Now, environmentalists are asking consumers to recycle the cork, for good reason. Natural cork stoppers (unlike petroleum-based synthetic closures) are a sustainable resource and one of the few forms of product packaging that is 100% recyclable, biodegradable, and completely environmentally friendly. After its life as a stopper, a bottle cork can be facilitated for flooring tiles, building insulation, automotive gaskets, craft materials, soil conditioner, and sports equipment. Imagine that!  A versatile little sucker, eh? Because ... Read Full Story

Climate Change and future building on flooding plains. While we all reel in horror at what has happened to the inhabitants in Cork City because of flooding' why on earth has it taken 8 years and hundreds of thousands of euros for the inhabitants of the harbour of Cork to get someone in planning to recognise that building a toxic or municipal plant on a flooding site on a crumbling coastline at a time of climate change is lunacy.
