I had a chance to catch up with Cory Higgins from Jetty life about Saint Patrick’s day in Hoboken, Jetty Life, and a surf contest between Michael Collins and Padraic Pearse.
What are you doing right now and why?Well I’m sitting at a Surf Tradeshow in Atlantic City with one of my biz partners and one of our surfshop buyers. We attend a few of these a year to get as much biz done in one place at one time. Hitting the pavement and dragging my samples from shop to shop can be a huge in the arse sometimes.
1. This Saturday is Irish Day in Hoboken. As a bartender at 10th and Willow what is to be expected? Not sure if I'm allowed to curse here but its a big ol shit show. Last year at 10am when we got there to setup there were 50 people waiting outside in a line around the corner. By 11am when we opened there were 300 people in the line all the way to the next block. Bonkers.
2.Higgins is strong Irish name. Where are your roots from? Actually I'm not really sure exactly. From what i'm told by my parents we are a Irish/Scottish/English mix and one of my great great relatives came over on the Mayflower. That’s all I've got for you, never got too into my heritage, probably should.
3. Big things for Jetty with the spring/summer line. Where did you guys draw your inspiration? Well we finally incorporated some cut-n-sew into the line with some boardshorts, walkshorts, and button downs. Even a few girls dresses. We wanted to keep things simple and subtle with all of those and just make the things that we would want to wear while making sure they merchandise well with all the prints and tops we did. As for the prints, our inspiration is always our grass-roots garage feel with a solid mix between logo based graphics and artsy next level shit. Our even balance keeps everyone happy.
4. What’s your favorite memory from Saint Patrick's Day? Just counting that big pile of loot at the end of a 17 hour shift. Its hard work but completely worth it at the end of the day.
5. What’s the best idea for a shirt you got? I fully intend on using it in the next line. However I will print with inkgedient, so its all good.Oh you mean inkgredient.com the screen-printing company that we run alongside jettylife.com. OK here’s the idea its a nature shirt with a Seagull giving birth to a Polar Bear all done in tie-dye and the Polar Bear is saying "awesome!" Please use that, I’m begging you.
6. What trend are you starting to see in the industry?Tie Dye as weird as that is, and a lot of eco-friendly style prints and ink.
7.Whats in store for Jetty for 2009?Moving into a facility...Finally. More cut-n-sew like flannels and fleece, and lots of fun jams with the Jetty Family.
8. Who would win in a surf contest Michael Collins or Padraic Pearse? I'd have to say Michael Collins but only because there is a great Irish whiskey named after him and I have no idea who Padraic Pearse is. Why do you have to throw me a curve ball like that.
9. Did you check out the article in Fast Company about Sean White? Regardless that was just to prove to people that I read and I am important. Now that we established that, what are your thoughts on what he has accomplished as an athlete and a brand maven?First off he spells his name SHAUN so I’m not sure that you actually can read. But yeah I actually have read that article and he is simply great at what he does. He is extremely smart with how he is handling his personal branding and being a professional and a role model. One of the best snowboarders and vert skateboarders in the world since he was a teenager and handling it like a seasoned veteran. Big props to Shaun White.
10. Someone told me yesterday that Skateboarding is picking up in Ireland. Have your heard anything about this? Lets corner the market ASAP.I have not heard anything about that. However there are some world class waves over there so it doesn't surprise me at all that you say that. The two sports have gone hand in hand since skateboarding started. And as for cornering the market, i'm down, tell me where the Irish skateshops are and i'll send them some catalogs.
