Cosmology news, blogs, and links for Science and Physics buffs. Cosmology is the study of the Universe in its totality. Big bang, expanding universe, cosmic radiation. All discussed here.
Appearing as strange flashes of light, color changes, or blurring on the surface of the Moon, they are known as transient lunar phenomena, and have been observed and photographed by countless stargazers and astronomers over the centuries. With no explanation as to their origin, even their existence, whether or not they were actual phenomena, was strenuously debated. The TLPs usually last for several minutes, and appear to cover a few miles in area. The effect has been variously attributed to... Read Full Story
Space is not the only area that are finding new things out of nowhere. The remains of an eight-million year old forest of swamp cypress trees were found in Bukkabrany in north-eastern Hungary. The trees once grew on the swampy, shores of a giant, freshwater lake in the Bukk mountains north of Misholc during the late Miocene period, about eight million years ago. The stumps of the ancient trees were discovered on the lowest level of an open-cast, brown coal mine, where at a higher level... Read Full Story
NASA’s Chandra X-ray Observatory has enabled scientists to better understand a mystery which has endured for over 400 years. Johannes Kepler, renowned astronomer, and other star-gazers noticed a new object in the sky, initially shining brighter than Jupiter. The unaided eye was the only means of observing the sky at the time so it was not known what the object was as it dimmed over the subsequent weeks. The origin of the object, which became known as Kepler’s supernova remnant, remained... Read Full Story
“The original Stardust mission was a huge success, but it’s brilliant that we get to use the same spacecraft to perform new science that will continue our understanding of comets and our solar system,” said Jim Crocker, vice president of Sensing and Exploration Systems at Lockheed Martin Space Systems Company. On January 15, 2006, NASA’s Stardust mission to collect samples came back to Earth carrying particles comet Wild along with interstellar samples, collected during its seven years and 3... The German philosopher Arthur Schopenhauer once said, "The discovery of truth is prevented more effectively, not by the false appearance things present and which mislead into error, not directly by weakness of the reasoning powers, but by preconceived opinion, by prejudice." The most fundamental "prejudice" that has directed the space sciences for decades is the belief that, across cosmic distances, space is electrically inert. Throughout the Space Age, every new discovery has been... Read Full Story
The term terraforming Mars refers to the warming or heating of the planet, resulting in the melting of ice caps due to the development of higher levels of CO2. The atmosphere will become thick which allows for the water to remain in liquid form instead of turning to ice. The advantage of this is that life needs water, and any planet with water has some form of life. The Martian rover Spirit has pretty much determined that the Martian atmospheric density and temperature are enough to allow... Read Full Story
Rocky planets, some of which could have conditions suitable for life, are likely to be common companions of Sun-like stars, a new study has suggested.
Astronomers have detected "warm" dust around a...

On November 5-7, a scientific meeting was convened by the Mars Institute, titled “First International Conference on the Exploration of Phobos and Deimos: The Science, Robotic Reconnaissance, and Human Exploration of the Two Moons of Mars.” Held at NASA’s Ames Research Center in Moffett Field, California, it brought together the main heads of science—scientists, engineers, space exploration professionals, and students on a global basis over a period of three days. The focus was on the two... Read Full Story
