This image combines data from four space telescopes to create a multi-wavelength view of all that remains of RCW 86, the oldest documented example of a supernova. Chinese astronomers witnessed the event in 185 A.D., documenting a mysterious "guest star ...

PASADENA, Calif., Feb. 13 (UPI) -- A European space mission has seen previously undiscovered islands of star formation and mysterious microwave emissions in our Milky Way galaxy, astronomers say. The findings of the Planck space observatory, a European...

(PhysOrg.com) -- Many of the Universe's galaxies are like our own, displaying beautiful spiral arms wrapping around a bright nucleus. Examples in this stunning image, taken with the Wide Field Camera 3 on the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope, include the tilted galaxy at the bottom of the frame, shining behind a Milky Way star, and the small spiral at the top center.

As expected, NASA’s budget axes a partnership with the European Space Agency that was to send two robotic probes to Mars later this decade. With the agency’s budget declining 0.3 percent to $17.7 billion, the Mars program lost out to the massively over-budget James Webb Space Telescope, the successor to the aging Hubble Space Telescope. The Webb will continue toward a 2018 launch. Read full article >>

Greenbelt, MD - Thanks to the presence of a natural "zoom lens" in space, NASA's Hubble Space Telescope got a uniquely close-up look at the brightest "magnified" galaxy yet discovered. This observation provides a unique opportunity to study the physical properties of a galaxy vigorously forming stars when the universe was only one-third its present [...]

(PhysOrg.com) -- A team led by UCLA research astronomer Michael Rich has used a unique telescope to discover a previously unknown companion to the nearby galaxy NGC 4449, which is some 12.5 million light years from Earth. The newly discovered dwarf galaxy had escaped even the prying eyes of the Hubble Space Telescope.

GREENBELT, Md., Feb. 9 (UPI) -- U.S. astronomers say a distant galaxy puzzles them because it contains a high number of stars younger than their neighbors, which goes against current theory. The deep space object, captured in a Hubble space telescope...

Greenbelt, MD - Most spiral galaxies in the Universe have a bar structure in their centre, and Hubble’s image of NGC 1073 offers a particularly clear view of one of these. Galaxies’ star-filled bars are thought to emerge as gravitational density waves funnel gas toward the galactic centre, supplying the material to create new stars. [...]

If you have US$75K to spare for your space museum, then you should bid for this Vehicle Power Interface Console (VPI) for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) on eBay. The VPI Console provided power to the HST and performed tests to its batteries and solar panels as it was undergoing final testing before it was launched in 1986.

Princeton, N.J. (UPI) Jan 30, 2012 A possible planet outside our solar system captured by the Hubble space telescope has failed to show up in subsequent searches, U.S. astronomers say. An image taken by Hubble in 2008 of a pinpoint of light orbiting a star called Fomalhaut about 25 light-years from Earth was hailed as the first actual picture of an exoplanet. Now scientists using the Spitzer Space Telescope say th

Happy 2012 ! I had not been writing in this blog since last October.  Furthermore, my first article was not devoted to my own work of this period discussing the OPERA result on possible superluminal neutrino. See my articles Comments on the recent result of the "Measurement of the neutrino velocity with the OPERA detector in the CNGS beam" (September 28) and Astrophysical consequences of the OPERA superluminal neutrino (September 29...

The Hubble Space Telescope’s userers at the European Space Agency, which is a junior partner to NASA on the telescopes management, released today a stunning image of a galaxy called NGC 1073. If Milky Way specialists are right, it looks a lot like the one in which the Sun and its planets circulate. The distant galaxy is hardly new to science, having been discovered by German-English telescope wizrd William Herschel in 1785. To the left and...
