Do you ever wonder which beers are the best examples of a particular style? What are the “standard of measure” when it comes to a stout, a lager, a porter? Are there such things? We think that there are beers that have come to define a classic style of beer. These are not necessarily the “best” in category, but they do represent what most closely defines the style in the historical sense of the word. For instance, Budweiser is the truest and best version of a classic German Lager. Now... Read Full Story
I'm up in Maine for the long Thanksgiving weekend, visiting with the in-laws. There's not much to do or see in this area of Maine, at least not much that doesn't involve a quad, hunting rifle or a pair of hiking boots... But there's beer lovers everywhere, right? Surely there's some quality craft beer to be found... Well, turns out Maine has a fair amount of craft beer, and a weekend brewery tour maybe just what the , but sadly I'm pretty far from most of what Maine has to offer... In fact, I... Read Full Story
I’ve done it, folks. I’ve finally gotten through three of the reserve beers by Deschutes . The unfortunate part is that one of these wasn’t The Dissident, which I am, perhaps, more interested in trying than any of their other beers. Fortunately, I picked up The Abyss the other day, and some friends brought me Mirror Mirror and Black Butte XXI quite a while back. Now that I’ve had all three and some time to reflect, I’m going to give a taste to reviewing the trio.
The Abyss: Critical... Read Full Story

Here is a beer I wish I had tried years ago but had always hesitated to until now. I am a self confessed imperial stout lover and I normally jump at the chance to try an imperial stout that I've never had before. During my last visit to my local beer store, I spied the familiar bottle of Dogfish Head Craft Brewery's World Wide Stout . I've seen this beer off and on over the last couple of years but had never bothered to buy it. Why? Dogfish Head World Wide Stout comes in a single 12oz bottle... Read Full Story
WESTMALLE, Belgium (Reuters) - A gold standard for beer connoisseurs, the Trappist ale in Westmalle Abbey streams through state-of-the-art equipment with not a monk in sight. It's thoroughly in accord with strict criteria -- that brewing be carried out within the walls of a Trappist abbey and controlled by monks -- but shows the changes wrought on the potent ales by modern life and aging monastic populations. "The requirements are a lot greater these days," said Westmalle director Philippe... Read Full Story
I found a new Colorado beer related book this week while surfing around on the Internet. I've been looking for some kind of Colorado brewpub reference guide and now there's finally one that's available. This book is called, strangely enough, " Drinking and Driving in Colorado: A Guide to Colorado's Brewpubs " by a husband/wife team Kathy & Lee Hayward. This book is billed as a guide to the 75+ brewpubs and also lists 19 breweries. They claim to review over 500 craft beers in this guide. I... Read Full Story
