Remembering Law Enforcement who gave the ultimate sacrifice - In the past 75 years, 14 county law enforcement officers have given their lives in the line of duty. The Lexington County law enforcement community wants to remember their sacrifices with a law enforcement memorial. The goal of the Lexington County Law Enforcement Committee is to erect a monument at the county Judicial Center with three walls of black granite. The proposed design includes an outline of Lexington County and copies of the shields of all of its law enforcement agencies. Names of the deceased officers will be carved under a blue line, long a symbol of law enforcement. “It’s important to remember our guys who died protecting our people,” said Lexington Police Chief Terence Green, who is spearheading the effort.

 

Lexington’s two 9-11 World Trade Center steel beams go on tour – Lexington County is sharing history with other parts of South Carolina. Last weekend two 15 foot steel beams recovered from the wreckage of Tower One of the World Trade Center after the terrorist attacks of 9-11 were in Beaufort for the Annual Shrimp Festival. The beams were given to a foundation to build a local memorial called the “First Responders Wall of Remembrance Forever” to be unveiled next year for the tenth anniversary of 9-11. The beans were driven down to Beaufort by Foundation Chairman Dan Hennigan of Lexington and firefighters from Irmo, New York, North Carolina and Lexington County. They were displayed Thursday evening at a local art gallery, Friday at Beaufort High School, Friday evening at the festival and Saturday morning at the Wounded Warriors 5K race. Thousands were compelled to come to the steel beams to touch and even hug them and reflect on what they symbolize.
