If Virginia gubernatorial candidate Bob McDonnell's lead in the polls becomes a victory over Democratic Challenger Creigh Deeds, don't blame President Barack Obama, blame Creigh Deeds. Creigh Deeds If Creigh Deeds wins, don't thank President Obama, look at Creigh Deeds, the underdog. Look, politics, for all the computers and Internet, and target marketing, is still basically a popularity contest. And in this one, Creigh Deeds is just not ... Read Full Story

With Virginia Democrat gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds’ polls growing increasingly bad, while Republican candidate Bob McDonnell leads by double-digits, the White House has decided it is now time to trash Deeds and distance itself from the potential loss. The story from the Washington Post , of all places. Keep in mind, the WaPo has endorsed Deeds twice so they too are trying to explain why Deeds is losing since they’ll never admit they’ve become increasingly powerless with endorsements. Sensing that victory in the race for Virginia governor is slipping away, Democrats at the national level are laying the groundwork to blame a loss in ... Read Full Story

I still find myself unable or unwilling to write a large omnibus "why Deeds failed" post, so I will just try and touch quickly on another subject--campaign visibility--before another headache is triggered. How bad were Creigh Deeds' visibility and branding efforts? Well, let's put it this way: on election night the majority of news anchors and political commentators, people who are well-paid to be knowledgeable about such things, were unable...

Republican Bob McDonnell's bludgeoning of Democrat Creigh Deeds in the Virginia governor's race last Tuesday has spurred a frenzy of speculation about national Democrats' problems heading into the 2010 midterm elections. While it is a bit of a stretch to say that major revelations can be drawn from a race in state that has a long history of voting against the incumbent president's party in statewide elections and where 56 percent of voters...

On Sunday’s Meet the Press, MSNBC hostess Rachel Maddow broke out the ten-foot-pole of disgust for losing Virginia gubernatorial candidate Creigh Deeds. Whenever I read the words, “You’re not from around here, are you?” I automatically imagine them being said with a serious Southern—or at least rural—twang. This election year in Virginia, though, I think that expression has a decidedly suburban lilt—as it’s the overwhelming sentiment Creigh Deeds has encountered as he’s trawled for votes in Northern Virginia. Ever since 2001, when their successful gubernatorial candidate Mark Warner...
