Today, Her Royal Highness Crown Princess Mary of Denmark turns 40 years old. Prior to her big day the Danish newspaper, Berlingske, sat down with the future Queen of Denmark at her home to discuss her life and much more. Here is a short excerpt of what she had to say:
Crown Princess Mary is fine with turning forty. She is more comfortable with herself, and she thrives in her role as crown princess and with her life with her young family.
‘I think it’s great to be older. I do not think about my physical age. I’m in a wonderful period of my life. As a forty-year old you know just so much more about what life is all about. It’s about being here and now, but I am also continuing my journey.’
For Crown Princess Mary is the arrival of the twins, Prince Vincent and Princess Josephine, and the occupation at Amalienborg the culmination of the eventful journey since she met the Crown Prince for twelve years ago.
What thoughts do you do you on the long journey, you have been on?
40 years is an anniversary, but I do not really, that the day has filled so much in my thoughts. I think rather that I run up to my birthday – maybe the entire last year – have found myself in a reflective period of my life, and recognize that although it has been a wonderful journey, it also sometimes has been more challenging than I might have admitted to myself. I felt very strongly that I should prove that I could live up to expectations.
How did the role of Crown Princess proceed for you?
I have always felt that I should support patronages that were important to me and things that interested me; How do I use my abilities and skills for the benefit of Denmark? How do I best represent my country as the person who I am? Obviously I have sought advice, made observations and learned from other members of the royal family.
How do they do it? How can I contribute to the big picture while being myself in my area? And, that’s what personal touches, like all members of the royal family have.
What is the response you get from the people? It still feel very overwhelmed when I meet the people and it’s nice to feel that you have the public support for what you do. source
