"The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off" Gloria Steinem
Crystal Lee Sutton became a hero to the labor movement in the 1970s, when she took on her employer, a North Carolina textile plant, and unionized the factory floor. Her story became famous nationwide in 1975 after New York Times reporter Hank Leiferman wrote Crystal Lee: A Woman of Inheritance.
In 1979, her story was turned into the movie 'Norma Rae', a thinly-veiled fictional adaptation of Sutton’s struggle to unionize the J.P. Stevens plant in Roanoke Rapids, North Carolina. Sally Field won an Oscar for her portrayal of the character inspired by Sutton.
Crystal Lee Sutton was 68 and had struggled for several years with meningioma, a form of brain cancer and died after struggling with her health insurance company, which had delayed her treatment.
Since the beginning of the United States women of all races, sexual preferences, and financial situations have fought for equality. The unfortunate part is that the fight for equality started with the desire to be treated with respect. The core of respect is kindness and "We none of us find as much kindness in this world as we should." Arthur Golden (Memoirs of a Geisha).
A Sophisticate knows that kindness is something everyone deserves. A Sophisticate also knows that kindness in life is like a drop of water in a desert that none of can expect nor demand but something we all need to live. Therefore, when a Sophisticate sees a cause that she believes in or knows there is a way to demand or fight for respect she stands up. A Sophisticate stands up for who she is and what she believes in because she is confident enough to know that she deserves if not just respect then a little kindness.
Regardless of sexual preference or the color of her skin or her financial situation when a Sophisticate sees a place or time where she could be treated with kindness or a cause that stirs her heart and passion she stands up. A Sophisticate knows that whether she is standing up for herself or others is one of the ways she can fight for or fight back for what she feels is right.
A Sophisticate stands up for what she feels is right. No matter whether she is wrong, making a mistake, or whether she will get hurt, a Sophisticate fights back by standing up for what she believes in because she has no fear. In the end, a Sophisticate knows that what feels right. A Sophisticate knows that everyone including herself deserves to be be treated with respect or at the very least be treated with enough kindness to have the hope to see the sun rise tomorrow. ;D!
