Homeless Displaced Katrina Survivor Goes To Jail
On May 12, 2008, Ms. Pamela L. Lewis was arrested by a Riverdale Police Officer. The charges were for two unpaid seatbelt tickets and failure to show up in court. They had Tara Wreckers in Jonesboro, Ga to tow her truck and had her Louisiana license suspended. The 4.0 GPA student, Katrina Suvivor, did not pay for the tickets or showed up for court due to lack of income since the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. She was not wearing a seatbelt because her seatbelt button is stuck and she has been unable to purchase a new one.
Ms. Lewis stayed in jail for two days until she met the judge that fined her $949.00. Ms. Lewis explained to the JUDGE that she does not have $949.00 and started a work from home position with a Financial Group two weeks ago. So the judge released her on probation in which she will have to pay $135 per month for the next-10 months. Ms. Lewis did not leave the jail until 9:00pm that day.
People, all of this is happening because of the elected officials are not doing their jobs to help the Katrina survivor get re-establish here in Clayton County, Georgia. Ms. Lewis acted mature by contacting the Louisiana DMV to see if they had a right to suspend her license and was informed that her insurance was expired. She immediately contacted her employer upon release and informed Mr. Ronald Dogerty at First Premier Financial Group what had transpired. Her overseer immediately paid her $500.00 commission to get insurance and pay the towing and re-issue license fees.
We at this moment believe Ms. Lewis' rights were violated. The arresting officer did not read Ms. Lewis' rights. She just stated to Ms. Lewis, "I am arresting you". She caused intended bodily injury to Ms. Lewis' wrist knowingly Ms. Lewis was in extreme pain. Ms. Lewis contacted Mr. Jamie Aliperti, attorney-at-law, via email and has informed him that if any of her rights has been violated, she wish to sue the City of Riverdale Police Department.
