Schwinn prospered mightily in Eisenhower America, enchanting kids with chrome swaddled cruisers, the top model weighed 63 pounds. In the 1960’s a maturing Schwinn worked on modernizing distribution, weeding out thousands of marginal bike shops in favor of well-stocked, well-run dealerships. Schwinn’s long decline began with the overheated biking boom of the early 70’s, when young adults by the million decided they had to own bikes, creating an opening for new imported models. When anxious Schwinn dealers reported how much lighter the imports were, a sales manager replied discursively, “Are you going to ride it or carry it?”.

The company that enchanted kids never grasped what sort of bikes attracted adults. Among cycling enthusiasts, Schwinn became a boring, second-rate brand. White-hot demand prompted Schwinn to turn to Asian suppliers as a stopgap. Later it relied on Taiwan because its antiquated Chicago plant could not do the welding on thin-walled frame tubing. Schwinn’s orders were mothering’s milk for tiny Giant Bicycles of Taiwan, which grew into the world’s largest bicycle maker. From an initial 100,000 order, Giant eventually made four out of five Schwinn bikes. Schwinn needed it more than it needed Schwinn. Though Schwinns from Taiwan were both better and cheaper than Schwinns made here, Schwinn seemed stiffly incapable of embracing Giant as a partner. The two parted company; Giant was present at Schwinn’s bankruptcy in 1992 as an eminently successful competitor and creditor.

The Vintage Schwinn Bike is now the collectors dream.
