Daft Punk are a group whose appeal goes way beyond the house music market. Legions of listeners who don’t own any techno records love them too, so needless to say, the seven years that have passed since the duo released their last proper album “Human After All” have been a bit maddening.
While the wait will still be a little longer, there is good news in that dance music legend Nile Rodgers is set to produce the band’s next record, an album that is believed to be more set on R&B grooves. Rodgers, whose appeal also stretches widely across the market having been a member of the disco band Chic and producing hits by David Bowie and Madonna, is most excited to be working with the band. “Those guys are great.” says Rodgers. “They’re coming to my apartment on Monday.”
The French duo apparently made good on their appointment, as Rodgers spoke to Faster Louder yesterday saying,
“We were just jamming at my house, but it’s gonna be proper and real…They came over to my [home] today around breakfast time and it’s now evening. I basically had to almost kick them out. We were having so much fun, just in an informal setting that we decided to make it formal. And it’s very formal. It’s gonna be amazing…
“It’s funny, I’ve known Daft Punk for some time now but we were never really close – we never got a chance to hang out with each other, we would just meet in passing…Today was the first chance we had to spend hours and hours together and it was just so awesome. Every track they played I just ran across the room and got my guitar and started playing and we were all dancing around my dining room having the time of our lives. It was something that was meant to be. It was interesting how Thomas said to me: ‘It’s funny Nile, it’s like we’ve completed the circle’.”
Daft Punk have also recently been in talks with Noah Lennonx, aka Panda Bear, on some new material. While first scheduled to work on a remix for a song on “Tomboy,” it’s now blossoming into possibly some brand new songs [via LesInrocks]. Now if we can get all three on the same record, this may be in danger of being too awesome.
Rodgers, who was diagnosed with prostate cancer in the fall of 2010, has now fully recovered and is embarking on a few new projects in addition to his Daft Punk collaboration, according to Culture Map, whom he told that in addition to his meeting with Daft Punk, he is also working on three theater productions, the first of which he will be workshopping at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival this summer, in Montgomery. For someone who seemed terminal a mere year ago, watching more projects pour out of the guy is pretty astounding, especially considering also the amazing body or work already behind him.
