A top NBA franchise out of Dallas, the "Mavs" have been playoff material since 2001 with coaching from the great Don Nelson and such players as Steve Nash (currently a 2-year MVP at Phoenix Suns) passing through its roster. Said to have the best offense in the NBA, the team, now under coach-of-the-year Avery Johnson and led by the oft MVP-nominated Dirk Nowitzki, finished the 2007 season first in the league with a whopping 67 wins.
Dirk Nowitzki’s ex-fiance Cristal Taylor was discovered to be a woman with a shady history and criminal background last spring. The two were set to be married -Cristal already had her dress and shoes picked out- until investigators hired by Dirk pulled her skeleton’s out of the closet.

To the objection of many (myself included), Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki appeared to be a mortal lock to win the MVP award.
(Steve Nash had the better season, and actually deserved the award more than he did in the previous two seasons that he had actually won it, but back to the relevant story.)
