Tragedy struck the racetrack last Sunday as two-time Indianapolis 500 champ Dan Wheldon died from injuries sustained after a fiery collision at the IndyCar Wold Championship at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Wheldon, and English driver who lived in Florida, leaves behind his wife Susie Wheldon and their two sons. He was 33.Wheldon was involved in a horrific 15-car accident on the Las Vegas track and was airlifted to a local hospital after being removed from the smoldering wreckage. The race was cancelled, although drivers, visibly shaken and emotional after the crash, honored Wheldon with a five-lap tribute.
Wheldon married his longtime personal assistant Susie in 2008, and she was with him for his win at the Indy 500 in 2011. Fellow IndyCar driver Danica Patrick released a statement grieving Wheldon's death and extending her thoughts to his wife Susie, saying, "There are no words for today. Myself and so many others are devastated. I pray for Susie [Wheldon] and the kids that God will give them strength."
