ALAMEDA — Darren McFadden entered the NFL a year ago with a reputation for being a big-play running back capable of breaking off a long touchdown on almost any play. The Oakland Raiders are still waiting for that to materialize at this level.  

Earlier in the NFL season I wrote a piece about how JaMarcus Russell will end up as one of the biggest busts in history, and some readers maligned me for it. Everybody has their own opinion, and Russell’s performance thus far has only been in my favor (the guy was benched against the Chiefs today...yes, the Chiefs ).   But now I want to look at another Oakland Raider who has fallen on hard times: Darren McFadden. Here is a question that has bothered me: Does Raider runningback, Darren McFadden, have what it takes to be the next great runningback? When the Raiders selected McFadden with the fourth overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, scouts had compared McFadden to Marshall Faulk. In this era of the NFL (1983-present), that is about the highest honor a running back can get with few exceptions. McFadden showed Raider fans a glimpse of his potential...  

In January, the redshirt sophomores and juniors of the college football world have big decisions to make. The 2010 NFL Draft could be the last year in which players and agents have leeway to negotiate rookie contracts freely. It is widely expected that a rookie salary scale will be in place by the 2011 NFL Draft. Roger Goodell has called the current rookie pay system, "ridiculous." Furthermore, the NFL salary cap might not be long for this...

Darren McFadden entered the NFL a year ago with a reputation for being a big-play running back capable of breaking off a long touchdown on almost any play. The Oakland Raiders are still waiting for that to materialize at this level. McFadden has been unable to get loose at all this season to show off his breakaway speed.  

The college football season is prepping for its conference championships and bowl game announcements, making it a good time to for a mock draft update.  The hardest part of doing a mock this time of year is determining who is and is not coming back, which means we project and could see a larger than usual number of underclassmen declare in light of a possible rookie wage scale in 2011.  This number of declarations could especially impact...
