Sub-populations of the mockingbirds remain on two small islands A rare mockingbird could be reintroduced to the Galapagos Islands - with the help of some specimens collected by Charles Darwin. A team of geneticists extracted DNA from two birds that the famous naturalist collected in 1835. By comparing this to DNA from living sub-populations on two other islands, the scientists revealed genetic clues about how best to conserve the birds. They report their findings in the Royal Society journal Biology Letters. The researchers used two specimens that Darwin and Robert Fitzroy - the captain of HMS Beagle - collected from Floreana Island during their ... Read Full Story
GALAPAGOS, Ecuador (Reuters) - Climate change could endanger the unique wildlife of the Galapagos Islands, and scientists are trying to figure out how to protect vulnerable species such as blue-footed boobies and Galapagos Penguins. Some 175 years after the wildlife of the Galapagos helped inspire Charles Darwin to develop his theory of evolution, scientists are measuring the impact of global warming on the rich but fragile biodiversity of the islands. The volcanic archipelago, about 600 miles west of the Ecuadorean coast, is home to scores of endemic species that closely depend on one another for survival. Scientists say abrupt and frequent changes in sea ... Read Full Story

Mosquitoes brought into the Galapagos on tourist planes and boats threaten to wreak "ecological disaster" in the islands, central to Darwin's theory of evolution, a study said Wednesday. The insects can spread potentially lethal diseases in the archipelago off Ecuador's Pacific coast, used by Charles Darwin as the basis of his seminal work "On the Origin of Species by Means of Natural Selection". "Few tourists realise the irony that their trip to Galapagos may actually increase the risk of an ecological disaster," said Simon Goodman of Leeds University, one of the study's co-authors. "That we haven't already seen serious disease impacts in Galapagos is ... Read Full Story

A husband and wife team has spotted what could be the beginning of a new species of finch on one of the Galapagos Islands, where Charles Darwin developed his ideas about evolution. Peter and Rosemary Grant, evolutionary biologists at Princeton University in New Jersey, have spent nearly four decades watching finches on Daphne Major, in the Galapagos archipelago where Darwin, too, studied finches.
