Daryl Hannah's arrest via Time
Daryl Hannah was arrested Tuesday for refusing to move from the sidewalk in front of the White House. The actress was using a sit-in to protest a proposed oil pipeline project. This marks the environmental activist's third protest-related arrest in the past five years.
Hannah, known for her roles in
Kill Bill, Wall Street, and
Steel Magnolias, was part of a group of 100 dissenters who object to the Keystone XL pipeline, which would transport synthetic oil from Canada to refineries in the U.S. Gulf Coast. They are opposed to the expansion because it would cover various freshwater aquifers and could leave 20 million people with contaminated water in the event of a leak. While police officers handcuffed Hannah and escorted her away, she grinned and continued to chant "No Keystone Pipeline" under her breath. The vegan / sustainable solutions blogger / solar power-home owner was released after paying a $100 fine.
Hannah told
People after the arrest: "I do believe we are in a time of crisis for so many things. And in times of crisis, you have to get engaged in the process. You have to walk your talk. Being arrested is something you never hope for. You don’t want to get arrested. But you know it’s a risk you take."
Hannah was previously arrested in 2006 when she chained herself to a walnut tree for three weeks to protest a plan to bulldoze a large Los Angeles urban farm. She was also arrested in 2009 for obstructing officers and impeding traffic in Virginia during a protest against mountaintop removal mining.
