Daunte Culpepper

Signed midseason of last year in hopes of bringing consistency to the quarterback position, Culpepper never won a game in 10 tries as the Lions starting quarterback.  

ALLEN PARK -- Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz has not named a starting quarterback for Sunday's game against the Chicago Bears and Daunte Culpepper said he hasn't been told anything. :"You've got to talk to the coach about that....  

Culpepper knows his client will be somewhere other than Detroit next season. For now, though, the 32-year-old remains in the middle of the Lions quarterback quandary.  

Culpepper was taking the first-team reps in the early portion of practice open to the media Wednesday -- ahead of Stanton, who was ineffective and benched in the Lions loss last week.  

Quarterback Daunte Culpepper has not generated a touchdown in his past two starts, when the Lions have been outscored, 74-3. After Sunday's 48-3 debacle in Baltimore, the decision to keep Culpepper in the entire game was widely criticized. Still ...  

In a surprising turn of events, Detroit Lions head coach Jim Schwartz gave an honest injury report before "game time decisions" must be made public. Schwartz announced that Daunte Culpepper would start for the Lions this Sunday against the Baltimore Ravens. After watching Stanton play. I think it's fair to say that, right now, he's a better reliever than a starter. Detroit apparently has no desire to rush Matthew Stafford back, either.

I didn't even watch the game...and I doubt that I would have had I been able to.  The last thing I wanted to see was Daunte Culpepper playing against that Baltimore Raven defense on the road. Sixteen of 34, 135 yards passing, 2 interceptions, zero touchdowns.  Average gain on pass?  4.0 yards, something you would expect out of your running back. The Lions backup quarterback -- an 11th-year pro getting another chance subbing for injured No. 1 Matthew Stafford this week -- can only hope the third times more charming than his first two starts this season.  

If Culpepper can lead the Lions to a victory at Baltimore -- and the Ravens are far more beatable than their reputation suggests -- it would do more to enhance his value than his statistics.

ALLEN PARK —  Daunte Culpepper will start Sunday’s game at Baltimore. Head coach Jim Schwartz made the announcement this afternoon. Usually the coach keeps his starters unknown until game time, so this was a bit of a switch.
