During that game he got a hit that produced the winning run for his team, but that's not what the Hall of Famer remembers. He remembers his cancer-stricken mother watching her son on TV and forgetting about her pain for just a bit.

The All-Star game is a memory he holds dearly because he knew her death was coming soon. She died in October of that year, on his birthday, at the age of 65. "Don't even know who won," Winfield recalled about the '88 ASG (via ESPN). "I don't remember all those other details. You knew there was going to be some finality pretty soon. It was emotional."
Winfield played in 12 All-Star games during his career, and the '88 game was his last, though he didn't know it would be at the time. I always enjoyed going to the All-Star game and I gave it my best," Winfield said. "It's just coincidental the very next year I had back surgery at the end of the year. I thought I regained my form, but they let somebody else squeeze in. I thought I could have made another All-Star game or two."
