Potatoes being grown for the Christchurch City Mission's Christmas dinner have been ripped out of the ground and stolen. The potatoes were part of a project being run by the Canterbury Museum and local children and had been planted at the Botanic Gardens. An anti-abuse group says a Christchurch man who shot his two family cats to punish his wife should have been charged with domestic violence. Donald Sloane was fined $1500 after admitting two firearms charges. A man's body has been discovered in a South Auckland house and a woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries. Neighbours called police to the property on Puhinui Rd in Papatoetoe just after 10am. Officers discovered the man's body upon arriving at the scene, but police say it is too soon to speculate as to his cause of death. MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm watch for Canterbury and is warning there is a risk of a few small tornadoes near coastal Canterbury late this afternoon or evening. Forecasters say the storms may bring localised, heavy rain and hail of up to 25 millimetres in diameter.
