David Caruso: Forbes, Just Another Rag

"How much do you make?"
Hm! How would you respond to that question? We would take a step back, with a condescending smile hopefully not quite covering a thinly disguised sneer, before replying, "MYOB".
Yet Forbes, following the current trend that says the public has the right to know everything, feels it's their duty to post salaries of high profile individuals. Strange, they didn't publish our salary; didn't even ask for it. How about yours?
In the same vein as any other gossip rag, such lists play to the lowest common denominator in our society by creating or fomenting the envy of those not up to that caliber.
No, we don't all look like Angelina Jolie or George Clooney. No, as new Moms, we didn't lose our baby bulge in 2 post-birth weeks. No, our hubby didn't buy us the Hope Diamond for our last anniversary. And, trust us here, a Rolls or a Bentley in the rust belt of the United States would not set well with the neighbors. Of course, it would no doubt be stripped if left on the street for more than 5 minutes, though it would never be stolen.
We will not expound further on the contradictory aspects inherent in these lists from an organization like Forbes. Like so many others, they fail miserably at the concept of 'practice what you preach'.

It's enough to say we don't give a tinker's damn how much Simon Cowell or David Caruso earns or, for that matter, how they live their lives unless, in some other dimension, it impacts us.
Ours is not quite yet a classless society. Granted, if it were, I too would be scurrying for a larger piece of the pie. See, we also can be bought. What does that say about us?
