MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin, stupid David Hasselhoff drunk again?

David Hasselhoff was the talk of the MTV Europe Music Awards in Berlin, with fellow celebrities questioning if he was drunk. The Baywatch star appeared to steady himself against the wall as he walked on to the stage to present the Best Rock award to Green Day, and delivered his lines in slurred speech with a glazed expression.

Dressed in a sequinned jacket and matching tie, he launched into a line from one of his songs, Looking For Freedom, in a performance which prompted jokes about his fondness for a drink. WWE star Batista, who came on afterwards to present an award to Beyonce, said: “Oh God, I want to party with David Hasselhoff.”

Host Katy Perry pretended that the actor had run off with her drink. Reclining on a chaise longue with an empty champagne flute in her hand, she said: “Well, this is a surreal life. I’m surrounded by stars, listening to incredible music and being served chilled champagne by the Hoff… Hoff? Bring back that bottle!”

Perry had earlier introduced Hasselhoff with the words: “Now, I’m no historian, but I’m pretty sure this next guy was single-handedly responsible for the fall of the Berlin Wall.” Hasselhoff played a concert at Berlin’s Brandenburg Gate on December 31 1989, to celebrate the fall of the Wall. He told the MTV crowd: “Twenty years, huh? I’m not responsible for the wall coming down. The East Germans are responsible for the wall coming down because they believed in freedom and they never gave up!”

The actor and singer was treated for alcoholism in 2002, when he checked into California’s Betty Ford clinic. In 2007, his 16-year-old daughter released a home video showing him lying drunk and dishevelled on the floor and attempting to eat a hamburger. Two months ago he denied US reports that he had been rushed to hospital following a heavy drinking session, His spokesman said he had had an adverse reaction to prescription drugs taken for an ear infection.
